Programme Objective

The objective of the programme is to generate and communicate knowledge in Hindon Basin on safe water, water security, and climate resilience and show why and how maintaining the good health of the River .Hindon is linked to their social, economic and physical well-being.

Stakeholders engaged

The programme has engaged 120 youth in the six gram panchayats and trained them as Hindon Youth Champions of Change (HYCC). Around 180 women have been trained on the two topics and close to 180 farmers have been empowered with water conservation techniques and alternative farming methods to adopt and mitigate to climate change and water stress. It has been heartening to note that the farmers’ are gradually showing their understanding on how the indiscriminate use of submersibles to extract water is depleting the groundwater levels.

The Cobllaborative Programme has engaged more than 1200 stakeholders. It has been implemented in the six Gram Panchayats of three districts: Maheshpur and Simlana (Saharanpur), Laliana and Tavelagarhi (Baghpat), and Surana/Suthari and Rawli (Ghaziabad). Six inter-college institutions across six Gram Panchayats have participated in the Hindon Quiz held as part of the programme. The institutions are: Amar Shahid Shambhu Inter College (Maheshpur), Maharana Pratap Memorial Inter College (Simlana) in Saharanpur; Netaji Subhash Chadra Bose Memorial Inter College, Tavelagarhi and Ved Vidya Mandir Inter College, Laliana in Baghpat; and Gandhi Vidyalaya Inter College,Rawli and Nehru Smarak Vidyalaya, Surana in Ghaziabad. Around 600 students have been engaged across the six Gram Panchayats in the quiz rounds

The five sets of stakeholders namely, students, teachers, youth, women and farmers were engaged in vibrant and interactive capacity building workshops. The workshops started off in November 17, 2017.

The Capacity-building Information Booklet (to be released at Hindon Mela) served as the training guide for the five stakeholder groups. The Booklet covers the two focus issues of Climate Change and Water security in an interactive format to keep participants engaged mentally and physically. The entire message was conveyed to all five stakeholder groups via discussions, group activities, and role plays, which lead to key learning being effectively imbibed by participants. There were opening and energising games as well as summative games to help the participants overcome their initial hesitation, remain attentive towards the session and give well-thought out feedback, unhesitatingly, for the sessions.

The Hindon Voices Channel on YouTube created by C4Y has close to 50 videos which chronicle the activities of the intervention in the voices of its participants. Students, teachers and social workers in the sector, farmers, and women have expressed their views on the River Hindon, its impact on their life and what they have learnt from the Collaborative Programme. The videos have become a defining record of a cross-section of the Hindon Basin dwellers on their concerns related to the river and the changes they are looking for and willing to make. The facebook page encapsulates the intervention from the inception to the final Hindon Mela.

The Brief Report developed by C4Y (to be released at Hindon Mela) will serve as a handy reference point for district authorities and government departments on the innovative intervention and its activities.
